Mother Russia Bleeds has moved out of conformity and boredom to innovation. The fertile ground of innovation and creative freedom has also created its establishment and its popularity. In a short amount of time, ten of thousands of players are already playing this game.
Apart from that monotonous, sometimes some products know how to give its players something new. Or perhaps more complex. Something that tastes new, at the same time is classic, as happened to some of the pioneers of modern indie. Mother Russia Bleeds moves perfectly in that swampy terrain. Of what has already been played and what is new after a spectacular visual.
Le Cartel Studio was the game developer of Mother Russia Bleeds. The group wanted to create a brawler in the style of Streets of Rage and similar representatives from the genre. And especially in terms of character design and somewhat older textures in the background. The game capture the charm of the older brawlers in a pleasant way. But what makes the title special is the story and the urge to be brutal.
Le Cartel Studio for Mother Russia Bleeds
The team behind the game, Le Cartel studio, Mother Russia Bleed founded in September 2013. Four independent developers and artists came together to embark on a journey. Their complementary skills and vision take them to the decision. Where they decided to join forces to create a game by themselves which in turn became Mother Russia Bleeds. The game they wanted to create was one that would usher a new era of beat ’em up genre
The two first founders of Le Cartel are Frédéric Coispeau and Alexandre Muttoni who are web artistic director. The two combine their knowledge and experience to create an indie game. They started by working on the game world and defining the artistic direction. Florian Reneau joined the project later as a programmer to code the game. Finally, Vincent Cassar, a composer known as “Fixions” added the last touch. That proves to be crucial for Mother Russia Bleeds.
The studio tried to create a unique style and universe for Mother Russia Bleeds. The game sets from photographs of popular clubs, restaurants, and famous places available on the Internet. They were looking for where the heroes of the game could be: among poor people. The mafia, drug dealers, or corrupt politicians.
Besides the progress that was quite challenging due to the genre they adopted. Team was also afraid that the public Russia will condemn and oppose them. So as they decide not to provoke anyone, the people at Le Cartel studio made the most fictional USSR. Inside the game which in a way is the safest option to go through.
Setting of Mother Russia Bleeds
As the title suggests, Mother Russia Bleeds takes place in Russia. Here, experiments are carried out on a group of street fighters where the character has to fight. With up to 3 friends locally or with CPU partners from captivity. The revenge campaign brings the player from contaminated sewers to sadistic nightclub owners. To liven up the gameplay, Mother Russia Bleeds’ developer offers the opportunity to heal the characters by using drugs. The drugs also enhances strength – we will provide the details on this later.
The PS4 version of Mother Russia Bleeds is impressive in terms of performance and control. Which in a way is a successful transformation of the PC version without any real defects. Meanwhile, on Nintendo Switch, although the title is of course not very demanding. The old school look still offers some nice details in the individual characters, which is a nice gesture.
The bizarre and, above all, extreme degree of violence is a matter of taste. But it definitely fits into the insane game universe of Mother Russia Bleeds . Which does not shy away from bursting heads. The decision to adopt the classic approach in terms of graphics. Was balanced with the background music that is bursting with a variety of vibe.
Plus, the punches feel extremely powerful, every punch and kick land on the body. Of the putty on duty sounds like pounding into real flesh and bone. And that in this type of game, the experience is superbly satisfying and must be appreciated.
One fine day in the gypsy camp, while enjoying a healthy fight with drunks, The players were kidnapped. The perpetrators were mysterious men in black who lock them up in a dungeon. All the protagonists were induced with this Nekro, a drug that has side effects close to zombie-like condition.
Quickly, the laid-back Russian gangster life in garishly colored tracksuits turns into a chain of battles and fighting. Final bosses, chipped teeth, and vomiting as players. Try to figure out why they’ve chosen experiment with that new drug.
The story of Mother Russia Bleeds is easy to explain: players will take control of a Russian mess and fight. Fight their way through Russia in 2D brawler fashion. More characters can be unlocked with outstanding achievements within the levels.
The reason for the bloody revolt is – as we mentioned before – the kidnapping of our heros . An experiment that is responsible for their drug addiction. Personal revenge of the characters is quickly complemented by an actual coup.
The result? Violence. A lot of violence to be exact. Players will need to fight alongside dubious morals through. Hired thugs, prison guards, police officers, and the military to the big string pullers. Drugs immediately turn out to be a central element of the game. Characters inside the game can drive both vital energy and playful advantages. From the green content of the syringes – and the dead bodies of the enemies. Players can also unlock various variations of the drug by completing the levels.
Gameplay Mother Russia Bleeds
There are 8 chapters in Mother Russia Bleeds that according to IGN can be completed in a few hours. But easier said than done as things will get very difficult towards the end of the game. Due to the limitation of the moves and the excessive use of objects, the game is very simple and can be played without problems even until the last mission. Otherwise, the title sticks to the usual guidelines of the genre and reinvents itself relatively little throughout the game.
As the game progress in the individual campaign, players can unlock scenarios related to each mission for Arena mode in which they can compete to hold more against more and more enemies. The enemies and the difficulty of these waves will depend on the scenario and the time they spend on the campaign.
The game’s gore factor is probably one of Le Cartel’s priorities. Despite the outdated graphics, body parts fly through the area while the opponents visually present with inflicted damage. In addition to the story, players can also stand in the individual levels of an arena, which allows them to unlock various drugs and rewards.
The local co-op is arguably one of the game’s biggest selling points. The players can sit with up to 3 friends in front of the console and fight the whole story together. The characters provide enough variety and differ well enough in the carnage. Plus, the fact that the players can revive each other is also a practical and brilliant addition.
The Tid Bit
Without a doubt, the Le Cartel game is one of the craziest beat’em up games with its simplistic 2D graphics – in the market. Most of them, thanks to the campaign mode. That can be made quite simple for the players within the parameters of a beat’em up and can easily be finished individually if the players know how to get the hang of the Nekro quickly.
Le Cartel has managed to create a sordid atmosphere that fits perfectly with the dirty and violent atmosphere of Mother Russia Bleeds. In the descent into the Russian hells, players will visit a prison, some sewers, a city in the middle of a revolution, or an elite mafia club.
The Club is the special level that needs special mentioning in which players entered an exclusive bar of the Russian mafia society. It is in this setting where the visual quality of Mother Russia Bleeds reaches its most spectacular point.
The peak just slides in as players enter the club as the background deteriorates and fragments in colors and shapes, revealing all kinds of torture and harassment provided by gangsters.
However, Le Cartel seems to have screwed up a bit with the final confrontation since the difficulty jump between the last final boss and the rest of the final combats is abysmal, making the player who has arrived confidently at the end of the campaign despair.
Fortunately, however, Mother Russia Bleeds is more than just a pretty face. Before, we already mention the ability of the games to move between the staticity of an established genre and the slight innovation. But overall, the game is a good Beat’em up and you know what you are faced with just sitting in front of the controller.
Game Mechanics and Controls
Although the game provides a small tutorial, it is practically unnecessary because players might have already know what they are going to do: kick, punch, jump, grab and dozens of variations to get a greater combo and score at the end of the level.
But, there is always a but and this time it is a positive one, Mother Russia Bleeds also knows how to look for a small glimmer of innovation within its very closed genre.
Everything in Le Cartel’s game revolves around the Nekro, a strange greenish drug that in the weeks have been locked up by the mafia seems to have taken over all of Russia. This modern drug has half the world hooked and has if that were not enough, some side effects that seem to turn the most addicted into practically, a zombie.
Well, this drug has a direct utility in the title since players can use this drug to heal or to force the body and get more power for a few seconds. This mechanic manages to give a special touch to Mother Russia Bleeds since in addition to the health bar, players will have a Nekro counter that will go down as they use it to heal themselves and will have to collect the drug from the corpses of the opponents.
Some of the enemies, when eliminated, will suffer seizures depending on the amount of drug they had in their nervous system before dying, and players will be able to extract this drug with a syringe.
Knowing how to find the right time to pick up the drug will be the first thing that was important in Mother Russia Bleeds since collecting the precious green liquid will leave players off guard for a few seconds and if the timing to eliminate the enemies is not right, the drug may disappear from the body of the enemies.
This type of practicality is maintained in the other game mode presented by Mother Russia Bleeds which leads players to relive the campaign scenarios but to face endless waves of enemies.
Enjoying The Game Like It Mean To Be
As players progress in the individual campaign, they will unlock scenarios for each mission in this Arena mode in which they will compete to hold more against more and more enemies.
The enemies and the difficulty of these waves will depend on the scenario and the time that the players are enduring. This mode will allow players to extend the life of Mother Russia Bleeds, which has a campaign that can last around only four or five hours depending on the players’ ability.
Meanwhile, the right timing when attacking, blocking, parrying, packing, and throwing opponents is essential – because the mass appearance of the opponents will get gradually harder.
At the end of each level, there is a particularly thick chunk of foes. But players can always adopt a certain tactic to have a satisfactory end for a persistent adversary. Then we give this example players can pepper a soldier with night vision goggles into the face of lightning grenades until they are blinding by a train.
The joy of beating Mother Russia Bleeds is not without its flaws: even in the most demanding combat. One or the other bug made itself felt. For instance, once the start of a level did not trigger, the previous stage had to be repeated. This bug is a persistent one as it keeps on happening in PC – but lesser in consoles.
But there is definitely no shortage of content and variety in Mother Russia Bleeds. Especially in local multiplayer, the game unfolds all of its charm for friends of the local co-op. Although players can optionally take one or three AI companions with them on a beat-up tour. This option is not favorable because the downside of taking on ‘ignorant’ AI.
There are times – too often – when players had to stand by and watch the AI colleague get pounded. Until players had to load the last checkpoint in frustration with the diminishing prospect of rescue.
This is then why Mother Russia Bleeds does not yet have an online multiplayer – and possibly for a good reason. Because the more players involved in the beating, the more overview is possible. Freedom and focus on the players’ character are essential in this game. Otherwise, frustration quickly arises – especially with the rather incompetent bot companions.
The variety of weapons is really good at some level. Only as mentioned before, most weapons make the game much too simple. Besides, each boss on each level will tell you exactly what to do to defeat him. Which in turn removes plenty of challenges from the game. The possibilities with a brawler are – of course – very limited but giving the player a text to indicate. What the weakness of the boss is just unnecessary and kinda killing the game.
Mother Russia Bleeds presents itself as a very solid action and beat ’em up game. but in addition to the high level of brutality, it also brings a successful story and well-thought-out gameplay.
Le Cartel offers the players a more than competent “me against the neighborhood”. For about 4-5 hours of story mode – with good final bosses – and an arena mode. where the players can also unlock different types of drugs with new effects for the story mode. Plus, the players can enjoy this alone, accompanied by bots managed by the machine or in a local multiplayer with three other friends.
Perhaps the biggest drawback to Mother Russia Bleeds is the lack of an online multiplayer. But it is one of those cooperatives that are most enjoyed by sharing a sofa. If you want to give it a try, the Mother Russia Bleeds is available for PC (Steam) and PS4.
