AppearanceZangief likes to wear red uniform as it represents the red Russia Star. Boasting as a tall one of the tallest warriors, he wears simple red wrestling trunks, completed with a gold belt, red and gold wristbands plus red wrestling boots which represents Russian flag.
In Street Fighter Alpha 2, Zangief arrived at the scene with a red cloak which he undressed it before the fights. It became familiar as he wore it in the 1994 Street Fighter II movie. In Street Fighter V he has more option. One, it is a red wrestling suit with a single long sleeve. Next, he got a red tank top with a golden lightning symbol at the center, with “METAL” sign. He wears yellow tights in a rainbow camouflage motif with dark kneepads and yellow boots with a red lightning motif. There are studded armbands, a yellow bandana and a toning rainbow camouflage motif.
He debuted in Street Fighter II: The World Warrior in 1991 as an unforgettable Russian fighter with a beard and a mohawk. He has a one-off chest hair shapes his torso and shins. The scars he has are results of wrestling bears in the desolate and secluded region of Russia. As the game developed, his design has stepped forward. New moves and tremendous physique made him an illustrious warrior, every opponent takes him cautiously.
Depicted as a Russian national hero, he becomes familiar with the Russia president. At the end of Alpha 2, the president promised a full support and sent him to train in remote Russia with a narrow budget.
In Street Fighter Alpha 3 the president asked him to fight Shadaloo. He encounters numerous fighters along the way and made friends with some. It has mixed ending. Some believe he lost to Blanka before he could destroy the Psycho Drive. In another line, Zangief returns to Russia contented as the Psycho Drive, somehow, gets destroyed by another.
Street Fighter II
He joined the second World Warrior Tournament, at the request of the Russia president. He lost to Ken and Ryu. Frustrated, he returned to train in the Russian wild, wrestling bears. A wrestling organization persuaded him to join, to which he refused their offer initially, but finally consented. The temptation of representing Russian forte in front of millions is hard for him to resist.
Street Fighter IV
Zangief was shortly away in the Street Fighter III. In a Secret File, when SFIII took place, he were fighting against Pulk Hogen (WWCA). He went to the World Tournament held by S.I.N, mostly because some of his fans argued martial artists were better. But soon he came back to prove he still had the fights in him. Along with his new arrival, came along a new powerful ultra-combo, Ultimate Atomic Buster, a better version of Final Atomic Buster. His second Ultra was Siberian Blizzard. As such, many think he was overpowere and so he was subsequently nerfed (Super Street Fighter IV). Nonetheless, Zangief still has the highest damage even with his first Ultra Combo.
Street Fighter V
After he won in the New York Fighting Tournament, he reads a wrestling magazine “Muscle Soul Fighters” sent by Rashid. He flies to London and encounters R. Mika. Zangief wants to test her in a fight. Mika agreed and lost. She said she wanted to fill his boot one day. He tells her to have “Muscle Spirit”. Then, they go to China for a training journey. Zangief said his strength comes from a “great power and dedication of muscle”.
Street Fighter V has a number of grapplers, but he is the purest. His skills are based on close-range battle to deliver an immense damage. He has a Critical Art, Bolshoi Russian Suplex, which he grabs his opponents and makes a devastating suplex to press them down.
Tons of players harbor love and hate relationship with this Russian hero. When playing him, players need persistence, tactic and willpower to become really good with him. So, he is considered one of the trickiest characters to master. For others On the other hand he is an awful fighter. Slow, bulky and repeatedly exposed as idiotic man, he mostly counts on one weighty attack and must be executed at a near distance.
